My art work is an investigation of techniiques used in glass.
Much of my glasswork incorporates woven copper and blown glass.
These two mediums are very different from each other:
About woven copper
Weaving is busy handwork that records the time invested in the process. Historically these processes are often associated with activities done by women in the home environment to create decorative utilitarian objects.
About blown glass
Glass blowing, is a fast, physical, immediate activity. Time and movement is rapidly frozen in the glass. Historically done by men in an industrial setting to make utilitarian objects of beauty for mass consumption.
I use these two processes for expressive purposes. Glass and copper both play a major role in the communication industry. Information is transmitted world wide through copper cables or fiber optics. This transmission of information parallels the way the brain sends out electrical signals, through nerve cells in the body. Quite often my sculptures depict organs of the body. The wire represents the structure of nerves and the glass the tissue and flesh. They are meant to be a view of things from inside. They depict the beauty and mystery found by exposing the unseen world within.
